"From Sneharam to the World Cup"
Only player from Kerala in the Indian Para Hockey World Cup team; Sneharam's student Suraj Biju is the pride of the country.
Pala: Suraj Biju, a student of Pala Sneharam Special School, has risen to the international sports stage with hard work and confidence, overcoming adverse circumstances. Suraj, who faces intellectual challenges, has been selected to represent India in the FIH Para Hockey World Cup to be held in Belgium and the Netherlands in 2026. Suraj also has the distinction of being the only player from Kerala to be selected for the Indian team.
Suraj grew up under the care of the Snehagiri Missionary Sisters since childhood. Suraj's childhood began in the Snehadeepam Bala Bhavan run by the Sisters of the Holy Spirit, and then Suraj's childhood and adolescence were spent in the Nirmala Bhavan in Poovathillap.
Suraj, who has no mother, is survived by his sick father Biju and his sisters. Aswathi Biju and Revathi Biju are Suraj's siblings, and since childhood they have been growing up under the shadow of Sneharam as children of Sneharam Special School. For the past 2 years, Suraj's father has been under the care of Pala Maria Sadan, and for the past 4 years, Suraj has been living in Maria Sadan.
Sister Rosmita SMS, the principal of Sneharam Special School, was the first to recognize Suraj's athletic prowess. It was Sister Rosmita's foresight and care that recognized the talent within Suraj and gave him the necessary opportunities and encouragement to take up sports.
Then he received systematic training for many years under Allyamma John, the school's sports coach. Hard work and constant training made Suraj a star who excelled in football, athletics, badminton and hockey. Suraj's remarkable achievements were especially in hockey.
Suraj, who performed well in various training camps, state competitions and national level competitions organized by Special Olympics Bharat, was selected for the Special Olympics Bharat National Hockey Team. This achievement later paved the way for his selection for the Indian team for the Para Hockey World Cup.
Behind Suraj's achievement is the selfless service of Sneharam Special School and Snehagiri Missionary Sisters, the collective efforts of teachers, coaches and other staff. The love, care, quality education and sports training he received from childhood have brought Suraj to the world stage.
Despite achieving national and international achievements, Suraj, who has not lost his modesty, discipline and confidence, is an inspiration to many children and youth facing intellectual challenges today. Suraj's journey, which started from Sneharam, has reached the World Cup stage today, and Suraj Biju has become the pride of Kerala and India.
